Hello everybody,

Luke from NZ pointed out to me the fact that first name and last name are not always displayed in the same order (time to times: first name + last name, other times: last + first name)

Luke prefers first name + last name.

Here is a short list of places where first name and last name are displayed:

-reports (like the booking list report)
-day calendar: W. WRIGHT for example and in the popup: WRIGHT William
-combo box in the forms (like the booking form)

I would agree to set everywhere first name + last name except in the combo box forms where, last name in first is useful to quickly find a name (by begin to type the last name)

What do you thing about that?

Where a list of names are ordered (such as in combo boxes), this should surely always have a primary order of lastname and secondary order of firstname, and therefor in my opinion listed the same way. For clarity a comma after the lastname would be good(ie SMITH, John).

Where there is no order of name (such as in the booking listing) it would be perhaps be more readable as firstname + lastname, but for consistency I prefer Lastname, firstname as above.

In reports we have control over which way we display it anyway using sql statements.

Records are typically sorted by Last name, First name.

I've seen where the list is first name, last name but still sorted on last name. This can be quite annoying as it's not easy to follow.

Since the sort order is largely a query item - just let it be set. However, my opinion is default to Last name, First name.

Well....

First Name should be ... First and Last Name .... Last

Most of the time we reverse this order for sorting reasons, if the reports are sortable then there is no point in reversing the order

My preference is First Name then Last Name sorted on the basis of Last Name then First Name

au risque de me priver de quelques lecteurs
je donne en français (*) mon point de vue aux "aviateurs ouverts" :


je préfère des listes <prénom> <nom> avec ordre sur nom (puis prénom en seconde clé).
Mais

a) on pourrait imaginer (le mieux) que cette disposition soit paramétrable dans des options,

b) comme je l'ai dit il y a longtemps sans succès hélas :-),
le point ERGONOMIQUE nettement plus important sur les listes
serait de RAPPROCHER la colonne "nom" des colonnes "téléphone"
(qui sont actuellement rejetées loin à droite) et mail.
En effet, sauf erreur, l'usage le plus fréquent de ces listes est
la recherche d'une adresse de mail ou d'un numéro de tél.
Rapprocher ces infos éviterait des erreurs.
Autrement dit je verrais bien pour l'ordre des colonnes :
<mail> <prénom> <nom> <tel portable> <tel domicile> <tel prof> <profil> <statut>
la liste étant présentée par ordre alphabétique sur les noms, puis les prénoms.

and with ebouchet, first name shoud be first (as "PREnom" in french has to be before the "nom".

Furthermore, and especially in displays visible to all members and/or the public, displaying first name followed by last name is more friendly and less administrative (or military) looking.

Thus, fist name first evrywhere except combos.

Hiall, I think I need to clarify my original comments to Christophe :-)

When you are searching a dataset (such as users) it is generally easier to use last_name+first_name and this should be the default, perhaps with an option to search in reverse order in case you can't remember a persons last name (especially in a large club).

However when displaying a booking - such as in the popup on the reservations page - I think it is more friendly and less formal to display first_name+last_name. This is not a searchable or ordered function, it is simply displayed information so from that perspective it shouldn't matter. I have already implemented this change (so that the popup shows first_last but user list is last+first) and people seem happy with it.

Some countries may have differing cultures/etiquette regarding peoples names, Here it has grown over time that, except for very formal situations, you would tend to greet a person by their first name. Therefore to extend this manner to OF I use it in the reservation page to good effect.

I hope that helps explain my intent.
